I have ventured into making my daughters baby food. Surprisingly, I love doing it! It gives me the peace of mind that I know what she's getting, no pesticides, artificial coloring etc... Plus, the food I made doesn't look as much like dog food or "mystery meat" as the store bought.
I started Maddie on solids at 4 months, she is currently 7 months, at first she hated it so I didn't push it. The apples tasted like lemons to her, or at least she looked like I was feeding her lemons. I offered the next food 1 week later, then she seemed interested in eating it. The first successful food was bananas and breast milk. She loved it but I'm not surprised because with the breast milk added to it, it was sweet as candy!
I started to feed her every other day, waiting 4 days in between each food to see about allergies. We are now on solids 2x a day, fruit in the morning and veggies at night. She has now expanded her food to sweet potatoes, avocados (she does best with these mixed with bananas), prunes (surprisingly one of her favorites), bananas, zucchini, squash, carrots, applesauce, strawberries mixed with apples, watermelon in her mesh feeder, and peas. She loves peas!!!
Making baby food came very easy to me once I figured out how to tell a good veggie from a bad one. I've never done a lot of "from-scratch" type cooking so that was difficult for me. Thank goodness for google, and the ability to take pictures and send them to my aunt so she could tell me if it were good or not!! I started making one serving at a time, I'm now making batches of 20-30 servings. Just add approximately 1 cup of the food you plan to use, enough breast milk, water or formula to get your desired consistency (1/4 cup for pretty much everything except sweet potatoes, they require about 1 cup, these measurements are for stage 1) and blend!! I use the Baby Bullet. I absolutely love it! It is super easy to use, easy to clean and easy to store when not in use because it takes up hardly no space. The baby bullet comes with a spatula, batch mixer and single serving mixer, a freezing container with individual slots for the food, and 6 storage cups with turn dial dating on it so you don't lose track. Truly everything you need all in 1 box.
Now I didn't go out and buy any more storage containers. I make my batch, put a ziplock bag in a cup and pour my batch into it. Pull the Baggie out with the food in it, cut a hole in the bottom corner and squeeze it out into an ice cube tray. This makes perfect portions. I put in in a gallon size freezer bag, freeze it, pop them out and put the food into a smaller freezer bag, date it, throw it back in the freezer and I'm done! I pull out 1 cube at a time to thaw for each feeding.
When I had my son, who is now 5, I didn't have the knowledge of how to feed him better. I failed at breast feeding and gave him jar food. There is NOTHING wrong with formula, my son is perfectly healthy! But with my daughter, I tried harder and told myself I wasn't going to be lazy! Plus, right after having her there was a recall on baby food bananas because there was glass in some of the jars distributed. Right then I knew that I was not going to subject my child to that if I could help it.
Maddie has been so fun since we started solids a month ago. Each feeding is an adventure. She has so much personality! She tries to feed herself, and of corse we make a mess. It drives her daddy crazy to see her with food on her face! Hehe.....
In the photo shown, it compares $3 home made baby food (30 servings) to $3 store bought baby food. The savings are phenomenal! 1 sweet potato makes about 20 servings. So you spend a couple bucks on sweet potatoes from the store and make it yourself with 10 min of your time, or get 1 serving for about a dollar when you buy jar food. It just makes sense to me to make our own!

Introduction to Sweeping
I saw this picture on Pinterest and thought it was the most genius idea to teach children how to sweep:
It's very obvious what this mom has done- tape a square onto the floor, and there's the goal! Sweep everything into that one spot. Sheer genius!

The Struggle to help my ADHD child
My lovely son Braden is 5 years old. After a wild "toddlerhood" and pre-k being a discipline disaster, we came to kindergarten not knowing what to expect.
Since August he has been suspended off the bus twice and suspended from school once. My thoughts? He's only 5!!! What could he possibly be doing that is SO bad to get suspended. He was hitting and kicking friends, talking back to teachers, not listening, focusing or completing his work. I had no idea what to do. Taking away things didn't work, punishment and grounding didn't phase him. It continued to get worse! After counseling with the school, I decided to do what all mothers dread....seek medical help. I was pregnant with my daughter, and desperate to help him because lets face it, it was probably harder on me than it was him.
We were referred and got an appointment fairly quickly with a counselor. After a few visits she decided he would benefit from seeing the child psychiatrist. We take the 30 minute trip for him to tell us that my dear, sweet baby boy has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). We were prescribed "Focalin" and went on our merry way. Well that was a kick in the face, it only made things WORSE! After 2 weeks, that bottle got tossed.
The second visit we were prescribed Vyvanse. Thank you GOD for Vyvanse. My son went from bringing home "red" in school every day for 4 months to "green" EVERY DAY!! Only one problem, instead of being able to sprinkle the contents onto apple sauce, I had to somehow convince my 5 year old to swallow a PILL. After trial and error we got it down even though it took about an hour every morning to get him to swallow. My son was starting every day upset, and angry over having to take the pill. We suffered for over a month. On top of that, the meltdowns started to get horrible in the evenings. I could not control him. We needed a higher dose to get him through the day.
After another appointment we were prescribed Adderall... the name scares me. Braden requested a different pill that we can sprinkle again so that's what we got. He has been an angel, just as he was on Vyvanse, and so far no meltdowns. The teachers say he does his work with them only having to tell him once, he's neat and organized, and polite to everyone including the friends he was once mean to. This has brought out the best in my son. He still has his great spirit and personality, and he is still as cuddly as he used to be.
This has been a road that I never wanted to travel, but I feel like by helping him that he can reach his potential without ADHD holding him back. His grades have turned around, and I'm a happy mom! We may not be finished traveling our road with ADHD, its not something that can just go away. I can say that I am no longer afraid to tackle that ugly monster when it raises its head!
This is my personal experience, and I urge anyone who has a child with ADHD symptoms to please get them help. The search for the right medicine is a struggle, I have been through three, and that's not to say that we wont need to search more or get higher doses. I did not want my child on medicine, but as I said, his potential shines through it now. Although each day is anew day and we don't know what is in store for us, We could not be happier!
Has your child been diagnosed with ADHD? What has been your experience? Please do share. Feel free to link your blogs in the comments section if you have written down your story!

Tell Me Thursday: 5/3/12 Edition
Tell Me Thursday, ABOUT Wordless Wednesday!
Yes, yesterday's image was quite the word taker. At least it was for me. It birthed a Great, BIG sigh when I noticed that warning label. You see, I remember waaaay back in the day when that woman actually sued McDonalds because she stuck her own coffee between her legs and burnt herself ... with McDonalds coffee. She sued, because it was after all McDonald's drive thru, and obviously they should have TOLD her it was HOT. Class, this was BEFORE iced coffee was a trend, the only coffee you GOT was HOT. If it was even luke warm, it was undesirable!
I believe that was the era in which we became a litigious society. When our loss of common sense became more and more apparent with each passing week as we heard of more and more STUPID lawsuits. I mean, if you can survive spilling your own coffee and become a millionaire ... right?
So I come up with a suggestion for Con Air. I doubt they'll take it, but I don't doubt that they would smile if they heard it:
Go ahead. Pin it. You know you want to :)
